Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

Jay and I had our AOS interview yesterday morning at the Norfolk Office (leave all electronics devices, cell phones, etc in your car). Keep your keys with you, cuz you may need them later...

The interview was scheduled for 10 AM. We arrived around 9:30, passed through security, placed the appointment letter in the box and sat down to read and wait. Shortly after 10, our officer (cannot remember his name now) led us back to his desk. The interview started with both of us swearing to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

We were asked the date and place of marriage, the date I entered the US and how many times I had entered the US before using my K1. That took us a while because between 2 legal stays while I was younger and the numerous times I've visited to go skiing, see my mother and Jay... well it took a few minutes, but we finally got all the dates down ( could have sworn that I submitted all that info with the I485, but so it goes ). Next were the "have you ever" questions from the I485 (Jay was chuckling through the list). He asked for picture IDs from both of us (passports and drivers licenses), then asked me what evidence I had brought as evidence of our relationship. I gave him:

* Bank statements for the last two months showing me a joint on the accounts
* 2 statements dental and eye appointments showing me a patient and Jay as plan subscriber
* Letters from three friends attesting to the validity of our relationship
* 2005 joint tax return

He also looked at a few letters and wedding cards addressed to us. About the keys -- he asked so see our house keys. Jay left his inside the car with the cell phones, so we showed him car keys and that was fine. He asked for photos. I had about 90 which he looked through and picked some from our wedding to photocopy. Finally he asked to speak to us seperately and escorted Jay out to the waiting room to wait. The questions were:

* Where was Jay born?
* Where was Jay born?
* What are your parents' names? His parents' names?
* What sides of the bed do you each sleep on?
* Where do you keep dirty laundry?
* Where was Jay working when you met?
* Did you have breakfast together? What did you have?
* Does Jay have children? Their names?
* When and where did you get engaged?
* When and where did you meet?
* Engagement ring? Did you shop for it together?
* Did you exchange wedding rings?
* Are you planning to have children?

I think those are all and he asked Jay the corresponding questions while I waited. After they finished, he came out to ask me which surname I wanted to appear on my green card. He told Jay that we should hear something in a few days and if approved, the green card would follow in the mail shortly thereafter.

It took about 40 minutes all told, longer than I'd expected. Still as interview goes, it was great and our officer was a nice guy. I didn't get the impression that anything was wrong, so based on what I've been reading here, I expect good news in the next 2-3 weeks (well, really sooner because I'm very optimistic). Can't wait because I fell into the trap of not changing my Social Security record to my married name before my I-94 ran out. I'm looking forward to having my US IDs in my married name (this split personality thing gets confusing to explain to people)

I think that's it. Thanks to all who have posted so much information in this forum. It really helped me prepare for the interview. Best wishes to all who will be interviewing soon.

We just had our AOS interview in Norfolk, VA this morning. The letter said 8:30, which is exactly when that office opens, but in fact we were admitted at about 10 minutes to 8! The lady was nice and not intimidating, she asked us the usual questions about criminal history etc... We had to show her some W2's that weren't in her file for some reason (good thing we had copies) and also my tax return from this past year. She asked us how we met, and my wife told her our story. Our one problem was that we didn't have sufficient proof that we live together. We live with my parents, so we don't have a lease, utility bills, etc. Also, we don't have any credit cards, health/life insurance, etc. Our car is in my name only, and our joint bank account is not sufficient proof, she said.
Soooo, she sent us off to get three notarized affidavits from friends, testifying to our living together, AND we still have to get some other proof of domicile. We're hoping to get something from our school, but we are open to suggestions as well!

Anyway, she gave us an addressed envelope in which to send these last documents, and she said she would approve our case upon receipt, and that the card would be mailed within a week or two! We were out of the building by 8:30!

So, overall we are happy with what happened today, but we DO still have to get a couple of things (at least we don't have to make the 3 hour drive again!)... and again, if anyone has a good idea/experience as to what else we can use... please feel invited to let me know! (Also, any other questions about my interview, feel free to ask about details I may have left out). Good luck everybody!

I had my interview yesterday and got approved :star:

Of course, on days you need to be somewhere at a specific time and it's pretty important you make it there, guess what, traffic is horrific. roadwork and a stranded vehicle on I-264. Great. I was already paniking, we'd never make it in time.

We had been scheduled for 11:15, arrived at 11:00 and barely got to sit down in the waiting area, when Officer Jones called us up. Wow... I've never been called up before the actual scheduled time ANYWHERE.

She led us into her office just by a huge copying machine and made us swear that we'd say the truth in this interview. My husband is in the Navy, so for the next five minutes she asked him about how he likes it and whether he had been to Iraq yet.

Then she went through the whole I-485 list... whether I was going to overthrow the US government or train terrorists (in what? knitting?). Noooooooo... none of the above.

She asked for all supporting documents we had brought in... utility bills, car insurance, life insurance, renter's insurance, rental agreement... anything that has both our names on it.

Finally she put her stamp into my passport while saying "this is the only case I have approved all day." :blink:

All in all we were in and out within half an hour and went for lunch to celebrate.

Hope everyone else has good experiences like this with Norfolk
:D

Ever since Norfolk went under the INFOPASS system, it seems to be much less chaotic once you get inside......however!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is a line outside to get in...it's kinda silly, specially when it's cold out.

At any rate...

Steve had his AOS interview yesterday. We were called in ON TIME for our interview (how freaky is that). We were interviewed by Agent Carter. She was actually very personable. She walked us back to her office (they have pretty big offices btw). The first thing I noticed is that she has a wall of Barbie dolls. I remarked on them, saying that I used to collect Barbie's and the only one that I still had was Indian Barbie - and she said that she's been trying to find Indian Barbie on EBAY. (Immediately I start thinking - hmm should I bribe her and offer her the doll so we can get approved hehe, but I didn't! Steve told me later he was thinking the same thing, I'm sure she was too, wanting my Barbie doll).

She had all our paperwork from the K1 there, so all she wanted was proof that we lived together. We showed her our Dominion Power bill and the home ownership documents (we didn't have copies, but she made them for us - everything we copied, she didn't want!). She asked for my four latest check stubs. Didn't need copies for those, she just tore off the part where they say how much they deposited to the bank. The only marriage question she asked us was the date we got married. I was pretty surprised at that.

Then she went into a very impressive question and answer session for Steve. She asked all the questions that we've answered before (e.g. are you a terrorist, prostitute, bigamist, etc). The funny thing is she was reciting it from the list that we filled out (DS231 I believe from the Embassy interview). You could tell she did it alot because she had it all memorized. Steve and I couldn't help laughing at those questions once again, mostly because they are so inane.

Then, wondering what more she wanted, she took her red stamp and stamped Steve's passport and explained our next steps (have to apply to remove conditional pr in 18 months, etc).

All in all, it was a very easy interview. She was nice and personable, which was a pleasant surprise. I had a coworker go through the process at the Norfolk office about 8 years ago, and the USC was called an outright liar and they are still mad about it (and they are still together - go figure).

Anyhow, hopefully this will help some of you who have to go through the process of AOSing in Norfolk!
